if some one pm me those alt+ 2-10 symbol via private /t, i am ok, but if some one do that posting on the gossip channel I am at, I "INSTANTLY" crash. it is probally has to do with language set of the OS. but I do not know if it is WIN different language OS or WIN english adding multi languages set to cause it. (i am a win 7 Chinese users). Once i get a pure english Win7, I will test what happen………………………………….I also note that I never see alt-2 and above symbol on gossip (NEVER) ..As soon as someone post that to gossip. I crash before i can see it
i reinstall my 2nd PC with win7 pure english version. now i type alt+2-9 emo symbols to gossip
no crash. this crash bug obviously has to do with decoding on language.

Can you have someone send you an alt+2 privately and see if you crash every time?
if someone send me via /t with those alt+2 - alt+10 symbols, my Chinese win 7 will NOT crash.
however, if someone send those emo symbols via channel or on room message. it is INSTANTLY crash.
my 2nd pc is reinstall english win 7. I am ok from now to hunt and watching ch 3. I do not know if other window's languages will have this decoding issue or just chinese only. you can get a clean pc with chinese version of window 7 to install (dont need full update) to replicate this crash.

To add more details to the case:
After getting Hideous Fatal Error every time I tried to log in to a character, even a newly created one, I decided to reinstall. After reinstalling I have the exact same issue. I am altogether unable to log in to a character.

And I don't know if this is related, but I also noticed during initial patching, that the updater stopped right in the middle of "PATCH13.RTP" and didn't have the "Processing Complete" and "Results" lines that the other patch.rtp files had.
Here's where it stopped
Am on Windows 10 64bit laptop w/ Intel 8th gen processor.
Update: after the server crash today (and also deleting a file called "The Realm" in the Users folder) I was able to log in again, not sure if it was the crash or deleting the file that helped, but the fatal error still occurred again in the middle of the 2ish hours I played so the problem hasn't really been fixed (but I did find that it didn't happen again after I exited the gossip channel).
And to add further onto what Shawn C said, while I am running on a natively english laptop, I do have a Japanese language pack installed, I will try removing the language pack and see if that does anything.
I noticed that I had the chinese language pack as well, so I removed it. Still have crashes.
Final update: Now that it's crashing on character login attempts again I tried deleting the file, and it was of no help. So, I'm out of ideas.
