New patch game launch error

I use a virtual image of windows XP to run additional windows of the game (or it will crash with too many open windows). With this new patch on windows XP, both sciw and wlaunch generate this error after the patch was applied: "Entry Point not found: The procedure entry point SetThreadErrorMode could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"
I can run the game fine on my windows 10 machine, and I tried reinstalling on the xp images but they generate this error after downloading the patch.
