Hi team,
The new client seems to have a minor problem when running on Windows XP (32-bit). The default shortcut created and launching wlaunch.exe from the directory result in "C:\Program Files\Rat Laps\The Realm Online\wlaunch.exe" is not a valid Win32 application. The Visual C++ 2017 (x86) Redistributable was installed as noted. I don't see the error at all on my Windows 10 x64 installation.
The game is launchable with a workaround - C:\Program Files\Rat Laps\The Realm Online\sciw.exe launches without any error messages.
Sidenote - I've always wondered why both sciw.exe and wlaunch.exe both launch the game… Is there any difference when using one vs. the other?
Thanks for all your hard work!
Can you try running wlaunch.exe as admin?
You should launch the game via wlaunch.exe. That is the patcher. Updates won't get applied unless you launch the game via wlaunch.
Same issue here, anyone get this to work on Windows XP in VirtualBox?
I've tried both wlaunch.exe and sciw.exe but all I received "is not a valid Win32 application".
I changed both to run in compatibility mode Win95 and now only sciw.exe will launch and take me to update screen (but as expected goes 6/6 patch and closes out). wlaunch.exe still receives "is not a valid Win32 application".
When I click Run As… It shows my default "current user" which should have admin rights in the VM, or I can select "The following User: "Administrator" but with an empty password box. I've never created a password and my host machine doesn't have a login password. I've tried a bunch of default PWs I've found via Google and a blank password with no success.
The legacy client still works, I don't have to run as admin or in compatibility mode.
I am also getting this problem running on native windows XP. Also, the shortcut created on my desktop does not point to wlaunch.exe. When I run the shortcut, I get "(null) is not a valid win32 application". If I run wlaunch.exe directly instead of using the installed shortcut, I get "wlaunch.exe is not a valid win32 application". I can run sciw.exe directly but it downloads a patch and doesn't apply the patch. I tried installing the visual studio 2017 redistributable but it didn't change the behavior. As a workaround, is there a way to patch the game manually? Maybe by patching the game on my windows 10 PC and copying files to my windows XP machine? Then I could just run sciw.exe on my windows XP machine since the game doesn't need to be patched?
I have a potential fix for this. Please find me on discord if you're able to volunteer to test it out
I'm also having this problem on VirtualBox - Windows XP.
I just got the Discord regarding redownloading and running the file again. Didn't solve it.
"This application has failed to start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
Reinstalling did not fix the problem.
Hi all!
Please do two things if you have issues.
#1 - RDragon's fix has been included in the most recent installer. Please grab it from https://realmserver.com/files/RatLabsRealm.msi
Install this over your existing version.
#2 - It requires a somewhat recent version of .NET. I put the correct XP one on our website - you can grab it from https://realmserver.com/files/dotNetFx35setup.exe
Install the game, install the .NET install, and you should be good to go - and shouldn't have to deal with any of this in the future!

I'm getting a 404 on #1 Link.
And I installed #2. Still not working though.
Fixed! The game works for me on windows XP after re-downloading the updated .msi installer and re-installing the game.
