Legacy and The New Server already partially divides the community by having us make a choice on which one to Join, and a Small community like TRO doesn't need any dividing. Now if TRO had 2000+ active players then it wouldn't matter to much and with The Realm mobile coming at some point I am hoping we can have all versions at least partially in some way share the same world so there is minimal dividing.
Yeah that would be nice! I think logistically it is impossible to merge the legacy and new server for several reasons, legacy is unmodified and doesn't have a lot of the same items/mechanics that the new server will have. Also just sheer amount of existing gold/items on legacy would ruin the economy of the server from the start. The only way to merge would be to wipe and I doubt the legacy players want their possibly decades of stuff wiped.
However, the good news, playing on the new server will be free for the most part, so the larger population will be in the new server, there is no reason why legacy players won't want to hop over to the new server and join the new community. Also because the legacy players are already pay to play, they will have all the perks for the new server. Speaking from an old school Realmer stand point, I would love to be part of the new and revitalized community that is being brought to life. Including the new and updated gameplay that is being developed.
To come in and lend a helping hand to brand new players to this amazing game for the first time, that's what the Realm has always been like. I for one will love to be part of it.

I have to agree, TRO community has always been amazing and helpful and yeah, i may be a born again noob here, but the roots are placed firmly and i have always enjoyed helping out newbies. I grew up watching and receiving the kindness of strangers, friends, guildmates, etc and enjoy paying that stuff forward! With mobile gaming heading our way and /e crosses his fingers, hordes more people coming back, im super excited to see what awaits the community!! Im a noble citizen but i love playing the other server also. Provides a good mix up from all the grinding. I also cant wait to see people making guilds again. Call me a cheerleader cause im super pumped for this!! Woot woot!!!! Lets go team!!!!
