How to Make Your Own Realm Skins

The Realm game skins were originally edited using a skin program called ActiveSkin 3.5, this was available on the original game site, along with a copy of the default game skins for editing. I still had a copy, so I put it up here for everyone to download:
http://moonguard.net/realmonline/Carrigon_ActiveSkinEditor.zip
Not claiming copyrights to it. Just sharing it so everyone can do their own game skins. Feel free to share the files or upload them here on the new official site. All that's in this file is the ActiveSkin 3.5 setup.exe, the default game skins, untouched, and a readme file with alittle instruction of how to install and edit the files. The program has been tested on Windows 10 and it works fine. Here is the readme file text:

ActiveSkin 3.5 and Official Realm Default Skins:

This is the old official Realm skin editor, ActiveSkin 3.5 from the official game site, and the official original skin files that were on the Realmserver site.

To install a new skin:
You must unzip them into the skins/user directory. DO NOT put them in the skins/default directory. Look for a similar folder to this one:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Norseman Games\The Realm Online\skins\user

To create a new skin or edit a skin file, install the ActiveSkin program, just double click the setup.exe. It works on Win 10. Open a skin file with the program, you can also double click a skin file once this is installed to load it into the program. Edit the file.

There are many ways to edit it. You can simply click the Hue option and you can change the basic color that way. You can copy the image, edit it in any paint like program, insert it back in with the SkinObject/Insert Object/From Bitmap option. Just play around with the program, you will figure it out. If you have any problems, make sure you are saving your edits as .bmp files, and you might need to take the color down in your paint program, like to 256 colors. I'm not sure on that, but since these game files were from so many years ago, that's usually what needs doing if more modern palettes don't work.

Have fun. I look forward to seeing all the new skins people will make.

P. S. No, you can't actually edit the in game files, you cannot use it to change the color of your boots or hat. This program is for editing your game windows only. You can edit the colors of your spell window, your health bar, that sort of thing. If you don't like the color of the game's button's, you can easily change them to blue or something else. You can do your own window borders, add new designs to them, do different colors.

NOTE: The download link has been updated and should contain the newest default skin files.

I would like to add that drawing it out first helped me a lot. Have a theme in mind and go for it.

Most of the free file sharing sites are a learning curve. They are full of bad stuff and can often be challenging to find the actual download link. Thanks for putting it at a better place.

just an fyi. a few of those files in the default folder you included are outdated. better to copy the defaults from the game file then make changes from there.

Carrigon

They were the old originals off a backup. I agree, fresh new copies should really be used.

Where do I get the updated files? I'll update the zip on my side and fix it in the upload.

they're in your, and everyones, realm folder under skins/default. but make sure and make copies and don't change your original defaults.

Carrigon

@Endal I'll update my post with your link since yours will contain the updated files.

Sorry to butt in here (and necro a thread on top of that). You came up in a search, and only because I am desperate… Do you still have the setup file for the ActiveSkin ActiveX (not the skin builder)? I use it in a project, and I no longer have the setup file, sadly. Thank you in advance if you can help.

I have two versions of the file.

Thank you very much. Sincerely appreciated. I'm not sure why, but I can't get v4.3 to register (same problem I was having with my file here). The older version did register. As soon as I can get my project back loaded, I'll see if the older version will work for it. Have a great day, and very best wishes. Thanks again. :)

The v4.3 file is from an unregistered copy of the software. This maybe the cause. Also I found skins created with v4.3 wouldn't work with The Realm so I had to fall back on v3.62.

I'd be interested in getting a hold of ASE but it seems like the links posted at the top of the thread have long since gone dead. Does anyone still have the skin editor files? I want to play around and see what kind of visuals I can pull off.

If I recall I did post a link to the software about 4yrs ago, not sure what happened to it. ActiveSkin v3.62 is the last version I found compatible with TRO.
Please do share your skins with the community. I had so much fun learning the software and I found using my own skins made my game sessions much more fluid. Speaking of which I really should finish mine, it's been a number of years in the making :P

Has anyone successfully add/imported any new BMPs into Skin Builder? I've altered some of the existing skins items that are in BMP form but it wont allow me to add them in. I can select them and click to add them but they never appear in the list of BMP's available to use.
