Poll: Should the undead resurrection on death be removed/replaced?

Some of you may remember the days before the undead had a chance to resurrect upon death. I always thought it was a rather unpleasant addition to the game and never fully understood the rationale behind it as it only makes them more annoying without any added benefit.

So I was curious as to who shared my thoughts. I'd like to take an unofficial poll of the player base sentiment regarding this issue. Here are the three choices I see:

  1. Remove the mechanic entirely.
  2. Replace the mechanic with something less annoying (or more rewarding).
  3. Leave it as is.

The gameplay issue I see is that players soon begin to despise fighting the undead (from early Zombies in RR). They give only so-so experience and are potentially far more annoying to kill (resurrecting). Despite this annoyance, there is no additional reward or benefit for you bothering with killing them.

Yes, you could just avoid fighting undead (as many do) but I feel like we're just pushing content in the corner instead of making it enjoyable and fun. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not saying make the game easier/dumb it down for me. I'm saying let's make it fun instead of annoying.

I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts on this.

I dind't really play during MW at all, so this was a pretty stark change coming back this week when I hadn't played in like 15-20 years. That being said, I took it as a response to the fact that previously, undead were fairly weak in comparison to other mobs. Most players start out as Good alignment, and with many spells getting a damage boost (WoTG, Light dart specifically) undead tended to be paper.

That being said, I would agree it seems a bit of an overreaction to that problem. And given most hitters aren't getting damage boosts against Undead, it's probably an over-correction. I like it, in general, as it adds a bit to the gameplay, but killing them should be more rewarding due to the added difficulty, so I vote:

Replace the mechanic with something more rewarding.

I agree it needs changing or even removed, its too punishing on melee having to fight out of summoned undead while a powerful spell caster is safe. maybe have them come back with little hp or add a stun on res so they cant just continue killing everyone after they're killed

Just as a point of clarity I want to point out that this isn't new or something that Rat Labs has added - it is this way on Legacy and has been for a long time.

That said, I feel like the mechanic itself is a nice mechanic and could have its place. I don't agree with it being on every single undead mob in the game, but I think it could be a nice addition to certain undead types and/or named.

Could always reduce the severity at which the resurrection heals them, say they only recover half or maybe a quarter of their health… and maybe limit the resurrection to specific undead instead of every possible shambling rotbags i.e. low end zombies/ghouls.

Interesting, I didn't realize that. Then again, you forget a lot of things over the course of 15+ years.

The 2 most senseless changes made in the NG era (IMHO!) are the undead rez proc and the increased mana cost based on SDM (thankfully this didn't come over to FF). Buff their HP a bit if you want more of a challenge. Pretty sure the increased base damage of acid/poison from MW made the port over so combined with the rez proc makes undead fights less attractive in the risk vs reward column

I agree it's not a lot of fun to play with this mechanic. We're looking into it.
