This is really long. I thought it was pretty fun to brainstorm ideas and think about new things in the Realm.
Here is a list of things I think would be interesting. My general thought is that the game could be improved by implementing things that do the following:
-give players more things to do
-incentivize people to be more active within the game
-increase ability to interact with the world as well as other players
-attract new/different types of players
I think there is a lot of opportunity using the base Realm that we have and it’s exciting thinking of things that might help.
MORE OPTIONS FOR THINGS TO DO WITHIN THE TOWNS
—For example, it seems like the focus is on fighting monsters and leveling/building skills. There's not much incentive to explore/interact with towns other than buying/selling stuff or sitting for long periods of time.
——Also increases the amount of options and skills to learn, making it more difficult to master everything quickly
——I think secret areas, more freedom to explore/enter buildings/locations, more ability to interact and leave a mark can help
—Ability to get jobs, join clubs/organizations (with duties/quests/interactions to go along with it)
——Alternative ways of gaining experience/skills/items, also increase player interaction, incentivize playing, attract new players
——Job ideas/brainstorm
———Municipal/government (could even allow different towns to determine type, like monarchy vs city council)
————People could find a way to fill these roles for a time and have quests/duties, make decrees, etc.
————Might also be a way to find new ideas- townsfolk want to improve their town, attract business/tourism
————This leads to an idea of maybe having shopkeepers/residents pay taxes to support/incentivize this
———Could even have jobs such as hunting/foraging to supply shops with materials
———Could have crafting jobs for clothing/weapon/armor shops
——clubs/organizations ideas
———Could flesh out the god-supporter groups as an example (also builds story/lore)
———Could have a pvp club in different towns/regions and compete against other clubs
———Could have skill clubs with quests/duties to perform and gain exp/skills/items
——There could even be dedicated skills that go along with these and require working the job/activity vs using levels/build points
———Some other skills could help this though (ex: a skilled warrior might have an easier time starting a weapons shop job)
———Allows people to level up in ways other than fights
———Or maybe could be different type of level, or maybe just new skills that help you when fighting monsters
—I think this would help give incentive to have the level 1000 people interact with lower levels
—Also, could bring in more types of players that don’t necessarily want to do a lot of fighting to level
INCREASE INTERACTION WITH THE WORLD ITSELF
—Can we leave things lying around without monsters always taking them (or maybe just in some places)?
——For example, in real life an animal might take some food or certain shiny things it likes, but not any random thing
——Maybe just something like additional areas beyond the towns where monsters won't take them
—Secret areas, houses/caves/places in the wilderness, towers you can climb, trees you can put things in
——Discovering secrets has always been fun for me (ex: Super Mario Bros. 3, Elder Scrolls games, etc.)
——Could even have NPCs in certain spots that help build the story, can help you with items, can sell, etc.
——More places where they are the only location you can find certain things
—Areas you can't teleport to, or maybe there is some barrier/difficulty that limits times you can, maybe have to earn it somehow
——I think this could incentivize having to travel through and experience the world more
——This could also increase interaction with other players as it would become a higher traffic area
——Don't necessarily need a lot of monsters in these areas, or if they are there they don't necessarily need to attack often
———I think of hiking paths or roads/highways- animals are there but not as much as in the woods
—Ability to leave marks on a wall/tree/rock, place items inside things, “bury” things (can show pile of rocks/leaves)
—Ability to set up a small tent or campsite
——though may need to require skill so they aren’t everywhere
——might require you to harvest nearby resources or use what you’re carrying
——perhaps could allow others to take pieces of this, especially if you leave it
——could allow it to deteriorate over time, pieces scatter, etc. to prevent them being all over
—Ability to harvest your own resources
——to use for crafting, selling, setting up campsites, etc.
——goes along with having jobs that require it
——could be a
——could sometimes have items found when harvesting resources
NPCs THAT YOU CAN INTERACT WITH ON A LARGER SCALE
—I think it would be neat if they walked around and did stuff too
——Maybe even some NPCs that you could group with and fight monsters
——The things they say can enhance the story/lore
——They could help the towns seem more alive
——More active NPCs would likely be needed for the jobs/clubs ideas above (would certainly help)
—Could have legendary characters doing their thing out in the wild (kind of like how bosses roam around)
——Perhaps interactions could rarely result in them giving an item or skill boost
——Talking with them might reveal helpful information
IMPROVE/FLESH OUT LORE
—Think it would help give a sense of being in the world, also make less “mechanical” gameplay
——I think there is a lot of opportunity to build history/info in a lot of places within the game.
———There are multiple doors that can't be opened, there are a lot of buildings in the towns.
———For example, the Undead Stronghold dungeon has the Ralumon family
————It gives me interest in who these guys are
————Why are they in the dungeon?
————What is their history? What is their significance within the Realm?
————Are they known for having a special item or did they somehow affect Bob in Caer Fandry?
———Another example: there are temples- but what reason is there to visit them or even care about them?
————Could be another good place to have active NPCs
—This makes Legendary and/or Fabled items/equipment that much more exciting
——Could hear about them through talking to NPCs, reading things in towns and wild areas
——Could even have exaggerations/items NPCs don’t even know about
——Certain ‘monsters’ could have personal items that rarely drop, such as Naktos’ baldric
—Have a rolling story that changes over time- possible idea
——Similar to Leinster being huge in 2.x, catching fire in 3.x, then becoming gardens and two towns
——Certain NPCs could change what they are interested in, could leave, etc.
——Having players as elected officials could also move the story
